Kennel Training

Kennel training your dog is very important, because it will give your dog somewhere that is his/her own space. Every kid wants their own room right! On the same note, parents don't want to share the bed with their kid.... at least every night ;)   So make sure that you make kenneling a priority early. It should not just be the "time-out" spot for when they're in trouble, because then it will have a negative reinforcement to it, and the dog won't want to hang out, or even sleep, there. It is also a good thing to have for when they are still young and you cannot yet fully trust them to not destroy your house, or go to the bathroom, while you are gone for even the smallest amount of time.

So the best way to make kennel training work is to start early. That's why I said you need to make sure that one of the essentials you got before you even got the dog was a kennel and a bed. The more space the better, because they won't be so afraid of it. A good rule of thumb (and it's also what the airlines require) is that the dog should be able to stand up, and turn around comfortably in kennel. Don't forget to size for how big your dog will be, because in  6months your dog will not be your cute little "handbag" puppy anymore!

The easiest way to get your puppy to love his new home is to first get him to go in it. After they go in it once, it gets easier every time after that. Allow the dog to go in and out as they please and don't ever force them in or out. If they are hesitant to go in, throw a training treat (something small and quick) and they will run right in. You can also crawl in there yourself, space allowing, to prove to the dog that it's safe and fun, this action will also build trust and loyalty between you and your dog by letting him know you would never make him do anything you wouldn't do (besides eating dog food!).

Don't forget to use the word you chose for their command every time ("Maximus, Kennel"), so they start associating with the very first time they go in. I use, "kennel" and "go to bed" came later, but every time you say "kennel" and they enter the crate you say GOOD BOY/GIRL!!! as excitedly as you can, and even give another treat, and repeat the the command again (Good boy Maximus! Kennel! Good boy!). This is very important because they will relate your elation with their success, with the command, with going in the kennel.... and Ta Da, you taught them to go in the kennel! If they don't get it the first time don't worry, or get mad and upset, but at the same time no treat, no excitement. Only give the positive reinforcement for the correct responses. They will come faster the better you get at explaining yourself, and your wants, to the dog.

Once you get the dog to go in the kennel allow him to check it out, and come in and out as they please. This way they are comfortable and want it to be their own space. You will continue to work on the kennel all the time, but the most important part is that you get the dog to like their space, so that they will want to use this, and they won't hate you for living them somewhere they are uncomfortable and afraid of. If they enjoy  their space, they will relax while you are not their, and also dogs are very clean, so they will do their best not to soil their own things, which will help with house training.
